What is MDR1 AND How Does It Affect My Australian Shepherd?

We get so many questions regarding MDR1 that we decided to shed some light on this topic to help our fellow dog owners understand more about the MDR1 gene and how it affects the Australian Shepherd breed.

MDR1, also known as MultiDrug Resistance Mutation (MDR1) is a change or mutation in an animals genetic code (in this case dogs). This gene mutation is most common in herding dogs like Collies and Australian Shepherds. The mutation of this particular gene in these kinds of dogs causes them to become more sensitive to certain drugs.

Brushing Your Australian Shepherd Puppy

This is actually a common question we get regularly… Is it important to brush your Australian Shepherd puppy? The answer is absolutely 100% YES. Every breed of puppy gets a brushing nearly everyday when they are born. Their mothers take care of it and brush them several times a day in their early stages of life. Usually until they begin to eat food on their own. Once their mothers have “weaned” them so to speak, they absolutely need a little work from someone other than their mother. Someone to clean up the wet food that mama missed and brush their fur.

Black Tri Australian Shepherd

The Black Tri Australian Shepherd is one of our favorites. The Australian Shepherd breed has been around for a long long time. They are a working breed. Many farmers and ranchers have loved these dogs because of their well-mannered behavior, loyalty, and ability to work animals like cattle, sheep, and goats.

Their long coats give them insulation in some of the harshest climates both in the summer and winter months. This was a huge advantage for ranchers who have to gather cows in the late fall months when temperatures would drop and well into the cold winter months when calving season began.

Online Puppy Scams On The Rise

It’s a shame some people have to ruin it for the rest of us. More and more we are seeing online puppy scams and it is disheartening that these scammers have no problem taking hard-earned money from well-intended puppy buyers. And as soon as they are reported, and the website is taken down and they simply put up another website and it starts all over again. It’s an uphill battle.

So instead of fighting these scammers on my own, I thought it would be helpful to educate our followers and anyone else on how to buy a puppy online without getting scammed. And then how to report it and shut them down.

The Australian Shepherd is a magnificent animal. We are a small Aussie breeder located in a remote area in central Utah. We’ve been breeding Australian Shepherds now for about 12 years. We fell in love with this breed because of their loving temperaments, their active natures, and their ability to learn quickly. We feel like they are one of the best family breeds to have around because they are so friendly and love the attention.
